초록미륵사상은 멀리 인도에서 성립하여 중국을 거쳐 한국에 전해졌다. 원효는 이 사상이 신라의 소박한 민중들에게 희망의 메시지를 주고 있음을 알고, 『미륵상생경종요』를 지어서 미륵사상과 신앙의 참뜻을 널리 알렸다. 그는 이 책에서 미륵사상을 논함에 있어서, ‘화쟁’이라고 하는 자기 나름대로의 독특한 방식으로 전개해 나아갔는데, 그 내용 중에서 중요한 부분을 간추려 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘미륵계 경전’에 관해서는 『미륵상생경』이 대승경인지 여부와 미륵의 모습이과보신인지 여부를 논하고 있다. 미륵상생경은 대승경이라고 단정하는 그의 태도에서는, 그의 화쟁론이 단순한 화해가 아니라 진리의 선언에 그 참뜻이 있음을 짐작할 수 있다. 또한, 미륵의 모습이 과보신인지를 논의하는 과정에서, 양설 사이에 공방하는 모습이 들어감으로써 논의가 보다 실감 있게 다가옴을 느낄 수 있다. 둘째, ‘미륵의 탄생’에 관해서는, 미륵이 태어난 장소와 시간과 대하여 논하고 있다. 장소에 관한 논쟁에서는 여러 방법을 동원하고 2단계에 걸쳐서 회통함으로써, 최선을 다해 제설을 화해시키는 모습을 보여 준다. 또한, 시간에 대한 논의에서는 확신에 찬 견해를 바탕으로 회통을 시도하는데, 시종일관 논쟁당사자의 마음에 깊이 자리한 무지와 오해를 바로 잡아주고자 하는 모습을 드러내고 있다. 셋째, ‘미륵의 수행’에 관해서는, 미륵이 발심한 때와 성불한 때를 석가와 관련하여 논한다. 발심에 관한 논의에서는 ‘확정된 마음’과 ‘확정되지 아니한 마음’이라는 2개의 기준을 제시하여 회통하였는데, 이는 다른 저서에 종종 등장하는 방식이다. 또한, 성불에 관한 논의에서는 ‘진실로 많은 행위로 … 드리워 보인다.’라는 매우 수준 높은 판단기준을 제시하여, 우리들이 경전을 바로 이해하도록 돕고 있다. 넷째, ‘미륵의 교화’와 관해서는, 부처의 존재와 미륵불이 개최한 법회의 횟수에 대해서 논한다. 부처에 관한 논의에서는 ‘경론의 내용은 근기를 따라 보고 듣는 바가 다르다’라고 하여, 자신의 경론관을 알려준다. 또한, 법회에 관한 논의에서는 양설은 일정 부분을 주장하고 있다고 하였는데, 이는 마치 맹인들이 코끼리를 설명하는 것처럼 각설이 일면의 진실을 가지고 있기에 회통된다는 것을 알려주고 있다.Wonhyo knew that the thought of pure land of Meitreya could give the message of hope to the people. So, he let the people know the real meaning of the thought through writing the Essentials of the Ascent of Maitreya Sutra. In the book, we can taste his spirit of harmonization, one of his distinct theory. Firstly, on the scriptures of Meitreya, he wants to show the truthful facts to the persons concerned by declaring that only one theory is right. And we can feel that the whole discussing process of harmonization is real by ing the debating part into the process. Secondly, on the birth of Meitreya, you can see that the opposing three theories are harmonized with many methods and steps. And he tries to disappear a lot of ignorance or misconception in the mind of persons concerned with the earnest efforts. Thirdly, on the cultivation of Meitreya, he solves the case on the basis of 2 criteria of the determined mind and the not-determined mind. And they can infer that the Buddhist scripture could be understood correctly on the basis of the very difficult sentence at the solving part. Lastly, on the teaching of Meitreya, he shows the fundamental opinion on the Buddhist scriptures that every scriptures could be different according to the hearers. And one can know that the questions can be solved although the assertion of theory includes the only small part. |
