초록원효의 생애에 관해서는 단편적인 기록 몇 편만이 전해지고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 단편적인 기록조차도 설화 수준에서 과장․왜곡되어 유통되고 있는 양상이다. 이를 바로 잡기 위하여 먼저 관련 자료를 검토하는 한편 사상과의 대조를 통하여 원효의 생애를 큰 틀에서 재구성하였다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 지금껏 발표된 원효 소재 장편소설들의 양상을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 관련 정보가 빈약한 까닭에 각 작가의 이념에 따라 원효는 천차만별 다른 면모로 제시되고 있음을 확인하였다. 이광수의 원효가 성전(聖戰)에 멸사봉공(滅私奉公)의 자세로 임하기를 독려하고 있다면, 남정희의 원효는 여성 판타지에 머무르고 있으며, 한승원의 원효가 평민불교에 뿌리 내린 반전주의자의 면모로 부각된 반면, 신종석의 원효는 삼한일통(三韓一統) 전쟁에 적극 나서는 민족주의자이고, 김선우의 원효는 요석과의 사랑 안에서 불도를 이루어가는 개별자의 면모를 취하고 있는 것이다. 작가의 착상에 속수무책 원효가 휘둘리는 상황을 타개하기 위해서는 시대 배경에 입각한 사료 및 설화의 적극적인 해석이 요구되며, 이를 통하여 원효가 엄격한 수행자에서 자유인으로 변모해 나가는 과정이 제시되어야 할 것이며, 불일불이(不一不二)․화쟁(和諍) 등 원효의 사상이 명실상부 결부되어야 할 것이다.There are only a couple of fragmentary records on the life of Wonhyo. Moreover, these records have beenexaggerated, distorted, and handed down as tales. This paper examines relevant documents and reorganizeshis life in the big picture by comparing his life with his Buddhist philosophy. In addition, this study investigates the pattern of published full-length novels that ed Wonhyo as a major figure. Results of the analysis show that Buddhist priests were described differently depending on novelists’ ideas due to insufficient precise documents. Lee Gwang-su portrayed the priest as taking a sacrificing attitude during the holy war; Nam Jeong-hee showed him as a character who dwellsin a female fantasy. Han Seung-won highlighted the priest as an anti-war activist deeply entrenched in ordinary Buddhism; meanwhile, Wonhyo was represented as a nationalist who participated in the unification war of three nations as written by Shin Jong-seok. The Buddhist priest as described by Kim Seon-woo symbolizes a person who practices and follows Buddhist doctrine and is in love with Yoseok. Active interpretation of historical documents and tales is required to overcome the crisis whereinWonhyo is distorted by novelists’ imagination. Thus, the transition from a strict religious trainee into a freeman should be presented, and his philosophies such as Neither One Nor Two(不一不二) and Inter-religious Dialogue(和諍) should be explicitly associated with studies about this priest. |
