초록
The Geonnapyoha ilseung suhaengja bimil uigi (Ga??a-vy?ha eka-y?na Practicers Secret Teaching), which was found among the vast stele texts in Fangshan, China, is a Buddhist text, which although originally considered by those who made the stele texts to have been the work of the famous Chinese Huayan master, Fazang, was actually written in Korea. Considering the period during which the place name Pyeonyang Sinseong was used, this book must have written in the first half of the 10th Century under Gungye or the early Goryeo dynasty.
The author of this book, the Great Hyangsan hermit Fazang, was a completely different person than the Chinese Fazang; an assertion that is based on the fact that the latter never traveled to the (Great) Hyangsan Mountain. However, by alluding to the masters works in his own writings, the author in effect pretended to be the Chinese master. This argument is sustained by the fact that during the Shilla dynasty the Chinese Fazang was widely believed to have practiced in Hyangsan Mountain. The term Hyangsang, or fragrant elephant, which hasbeen used as a nickname for the Huayan master in Japan, may also be closely related to this belief as the term may have been transmitted from Shilla to Japan as the Japanese learned Huayan Buddhism from Korean scholars.
In the Bimil uigi we can find the influences of various schools of thought including Huayan Buddhism, Dacheng qishin lun thought, Esoteric Buddhism as well as other Chinese indigenous schools of thoughts such as Wuxing and Yi-jing. This book, based on the Dacheng qishin lun, emphasizes the innate nondiscrimination of all beings and justifies this thought using logic and philosophical terms developed in Huayan thought. In this sense the thoughts found in the Bimil uigi can be regarded as a kind of synthesis of the two schools of thought developed by the famous scholars Uisang and Wonhyo. But as it interpreted their theories and terms in its own way, this book has been blamed for misinterpreting and distorting Buddhism by monks such as Uicheon.
